Quick Hits: New Directions

Over the next few weeks I’m going to be updating the site a bit and might even start some social media accounts for better outreach. I’ve never been too concerned with numbers; I like to write, and if a few people enjoy what I write, that’s great!

When I started the website, it was a Saturday afternoon project where I selected my graphics, wrote and edited the initial pages and organized everything. Not that I think anything was in bad taste or poorly put together, but it’s definitely time for an update. With close to 60 articles written, I also have a better idea for the “tone” and audience than I did when I first started.

I always get a laugh out of the specificity writers. People so beholden to a brand image that they write only about a very narrow subject. It’s like Bubba from Forest Gump talking about shrimp…

There’s articles on shrimp, fried shrimp, coconut shrimp…

I could never write that way. For one, being true to your ideals and principles is one thing, but being true to a “brand image” is a farce. It limits what you can write about, but I’m sure it helps with retweets from big name corporations and media empires when they need your “expertise” about once or twice a month.

On the same note, people most beholden to a brand image will sell out their beliefs, family and friends just to promote their brand. You won’t get that here, but you also won’t get a highly specialized blog either. I write about what interests me, and about topics that I want to talk about.

A lot of people who write feel intimidated by “big names” out there, maybe they have a Ph.D next to their name, or they work for a world famous company. No big deal to me. How many “big names” got the whole weapons of mass destruction in Iraq wrong? How many pundits predicted Hilary Clinton would easily walk away with the election? Don’t be intimidated into silence.
